I. Introduction
The Stats Machine is a useful sysop utility for Wildcat 3.xx which
generates two bulletins (one color and one mono) of statistics by
reading the ACTIVITY.XXX file.
NOTE: This version of The Stats Machine only reads the ACTIVITY.001
file. Future versions might be written for use with multi-node systems.
Currently the program will keep track of the following statistics:
- # and % of calls for each baud rate (300,1200,2400,9600,14400,
and LOCAL)
- # and % of calls per day of the week
- # and % of calls per hour of the day
- # and % of most type of logoffs (including normal, drop carrier,
exceeded time limit, no activity)
- # and % of file transfers for each protocol
- The top five most popular questionnaires (with corresponding #
and %) NOTE: This version only keeps track of the first 10
questionnaires. Future versions might include more.
- # of downloads
- # of uploads
- # of new users added since last run of The Stats Machine
- # of questionnaires answered
- # of doors opened
- # of times Sysop was paged
- # of times newsletter was read
- Total number of messages left
- # and % of ANSI and non-ANSI calls
- # and % of MNP and non-MNP calls
- # and % of illegal logon attempts
- # and % of cancelled file transfers
- first date in ACTIVITY.001 file
- current date
- misc. graphs
- and a few other stats
NOTE: You may encounter an occasional problem with some of the numbers
not adding up correctly (for example, total logons not equalling total
logoffs, or total file transfers [by protocol] not equalling total
uploads and downloads). The problem arises with the format of the
ACTIVITY.001 file used by Wildcat.
The following files should be included in the zip file:
STATS.EXE - The executable portion of The Stats Machine.
STATS.DOC - The file you are reading right now.
ORDERFRM.DOC - Registration form.
SAMPLE.TXT - Sample bulletin (mono) created with The Stats Machine
SAMPLEQ.TXT - Sample 'QUICK' bulletin (mono) that can be created with
the registered version of The Stats Machine.
PROGS.TXT - Listing of other Wildcat programs written by UP
Technologies, Inc.
README.NOW - File contains additional information.
If any of these files are missing, you can always download the latest
version of The Stats Machine from The Upper Limit BBS at (410) 860-0212.
II. Running The Stats Machine
To run the program, type the following at the DOS prompt:
STATS [/g] [/s] [/?]
Running the program will result in the creation of two new files:
STATS.BBS (color version) and STATS.TXT (mono version). The color file
uses the Wildcat color codes.
Optional Parameters
The /G parameter will result in the creation of several
graphs including: Calls by Days of the Week, Calls by Baud Rate, File
Transfers by Protocol Used, Top 10 Doors, Top 10 Bulletins, Top 10
Questionnaires, ANSI vs. Non-ANSI Calls, MNP .vs Non-MNP Calls, and
Calls by Hours of the Day. These graphs will be included in the
bulletins. The graphs also use Wildcat color codes.
The /S parameter will allow you to save stat totals to a file called
"STATS.DAT." It is now possible to read these stats in from the STATS.DAT
file, in addition to reading the ACTIVITY.001 file. In order to prevent
totals from being added twice, the ACTIVITY.001 file will be deleted upon
completion of running the Stats Machine if this parameter is selected. If
you want to maintain a collection of your activity files, just add a line
in your batch file to copy ACTIVITY.001 to another file.
The /? parameter will display a help screen with a list of optional
parameters.
NOTE: If any parameters other than the ones mentioned above are used,
the program will ignore them.
IV. Registration
The Stats Machine is not free or in the public domain. It is
shareware, which means that you are expected to pay for it if you find
it useful. Registration is only $10 US. If you use The Stats Machine
for more than one month, you should register it. When you register The
Stats Machine your board name will appear in the opening screen. For
more information, refer to the ORDERFRM.DOC file.
When you register the Stats Machine, you get extra features, including:
* Your BBS name in bulletin screens.
* Ability to create a 'QUICK' one-screen file with the most important
stats.
* Ability to create mono file. By default, the registered version does NOT
create a mono file automatically.
* Extra screen containing information on BBS events.
By registering The Stats Machine, this will provide me with encouragement
to add further enhancements and features.
